The events center this year also ended an annual promotion with Cefco convenience stores that would distribute about 6,000 free admission passes to the opening Sneak-a-Peek night. That event brought in about 5,400 visitors this year, nearly 3,000 less than the number of people who typically would attend the Sneak-a-Peek. Allison said the decision to end the free Cefco coupon was to weed out residents who would come only to cause trouble with no intention of actually participating in the carnival. Gang activity also has become a concern in recent years, Allison said. Those adjustments were among a number of changes that impacted turnout for some fair attractions. The fairs HOT Concert Series covered only two nights this year and brought in about 2,500 participants, compared to 4,500 concert attendees during three nights during the inaugural series last year. The coliseum of the Extraco Events Center can accommodate as many as 4,000 people for concerts, Allison said. HOT Concert Series tickets are not included in fair admission. Thursday concert Allison said the fair eliminated the Thursday concert because it is typically a low-turnout night. This years main draw, KC and the Sunshine Band, did not sell as many tickets as last years lead artist, the Beach Boys, who brought along actor-singer John Stamos. Its part of doing entertainment, Allison said.
(Posted By Des Plaines Park District, Community Contributor / October 14, 2013) Posted by Des Plaines Park District, Community Contributor 1:24 p.m. CDT, October 14, 2013 In February of 1878, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovskys Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36, premiered at a Russian Musical Society concert in Moscow with Nikolai Rubinstein as conductor. Considered the first of his mature symphonic works, Tchaikovsky dedicated the piece to his patroness Nadezhda von Meck. On finishing the symphony, the composer wrote, “It seems to me that this is my best work. Of my two latest creations, the opera and the symphony, I favor the latter. What lies in store for this symphony? Will it survive long after its author has disappeared from the face of the earth, or straight away plunge into the depths of oblivion? I only know that at this moment I… am blind to any shortcomings in my new offspring. Yet I am sure that, as regards texture and form, it represents a step forward in my development…” Now, 135 years after the creation of this magnificent symphony, the Des Plaines Park District Community Concert Band, under the direction of Lawrence J. Carle, will perform the finale from Symphony No.
